MALARIA

QUICK LINKS

ABOUT

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite that infects the blood. Globally, malaria is a major public health problem in tropical regions and results in nearly one million deaths per year, primarily in Africa. In West Virginia, 1–2 travel-associated cases of malaria are reported each year in persons who have visited a country where malaria transmission is common. Anti-malaria medications are available for travelers to take during travel to reduce their risk of malaria infection.
